Palm oil production has long been criticised for its environmental impact through deforestation and despite a strong environmental case for curtailing the industry, at present none of the existing alternative products would be economically or environmentally viable at scale.

“Palm oil is the most widely used land-grown oil crop, and expansion in the market over the past few decades has led to increases in greenhouse gas emissions and the loss of biodiverse tropical forest areas to farming. Whilst action is being taken to improve the sustainability of palm oil cultivation it is not happening as effectively or quickly as it needs to.”

“Governments in producing countries and industry should be working together closely to reduce the impact of the industry while synthetic alternatives are developed for the sake of our climate.”

The suite of measures they recommend to reduce the impact of production include empowering the existing Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) scheme to take effective enforcement action where needed.

Give them a window of hope

I say that in behalf of Promoters & Developers (P&Ds) out there. Not on behalf of the whole circus surrounding them, like vultures, making themselves money from sources which have been fake, ever-since the system went alive in the first trading period before 2007. This was the moment I personally got acquainted with it.

So much for mandatory and voluntary carbon dioxide equivalent reduction certificate prices in your system, true price levels have never come to the P&Ds who are trying to make an honest living from such markets. But they aren’t naking..P&Ds are losing dedicated jobs.
Lust for investments has faded away. Replication and duplication potentials are far away from happening.

Yet there is hope. And my company with entrepeneurial scientific-pragmatic-technical specialism sees that at the horizon, 2020. I see trustworthy markets that recognize P&Ds and pay them back, so they could prevail, and even be the model to replicate and duplicate of what they are doing within their neighbourhood. I see jobs that will go into the right
direction. I see more sustainable balance and ecosystems that will continue to exist, as a direct spin-off of your system.

But, P&Ds who are out there, aren’t seeing that same hope in your system anymore, like
their pilot flame has gone out. My vision is that it can be resparked, but then you should give them the time, to regain hope and enable them to get in true connection with the horizon markets.

Grant all of them the extension of the grace period with one year, until 31-12-2020. Don’t let
them drown, please.

Morgen, maandag 25 november, gaan de 3 weken van start.

Waarom vind ik dit zo belangrijk?

Er is een vergadering die als alles goed gaat, door mij wordt bijgewoond, pfff, met reden.

Al sinds mei 2019 heb ik een punt gemaakt, die op agenda van vergadering zou zijn behandeld in september 2019 (dat is al 4 maanden wachten geweest…). Daaruit werd geconcludeerd dat mijn punt het behandelen waard was, maar moest worden doorgeschoven naar de volgende vergadering, duh… november 2019 (nog eens 2 maanden wachten…).
Het leek mij toen wel eens welletjes om maar eens aan de tafel aan te schuiven. Daarom dus…

Mijn rede moest ik vandaag aan de vergadering doorgeven. Ik deel hem hier voor wie daarin is geïnteresseerd.

Met die ervaring in de pocket, moet het toch voor hen die daarvoor zijn gecertificeerd op de analoge marktplaats beheerd door de VN (of nog gecertificeerd zullen worden), kunnen leiden tot soortgelijk succes? Dat zal afhankelijjk zijn van de uitkomsten uit de onderhandelingen in Madrid aanstaande weken, met name op het vlak van wereldwijde overeenkomst op ‘Artikel 6’ van het Parijs Akkoord, van al weer eind 2015.

Hierbij het aanbod dat wordt gedaan aan hoofdzakelijk de Spaanstalige promoters-developers:

In Madrid zal er alles aan worden gedaan om bestaande en nieuwe promoters-developers te helpen bij continuering van wereldwijde ondersteuning voor hun CO2-reducties. Met de voor certificering noodzakelijke werkzaamheden aan de Sustainable Development Goals.

Maar door een uitstel aan de zijde van de Verenigde Naties, zat er dus niks anders op om hierover verder te vergaderen tijdens de COP25 in Chili, eind november van dit jaar.

Het is nooit de bedoeling geweest om vanuit Nederland zover te moeten reizen, maar er hangt wel wat van af. Enkele van onze relaties ‘promoters & developers’, 1 in Honduras en 6 in Peru. als de eigenaren van klimaatprojecten, zullen namelijk nog eens een jaar langer de tijd gegund kunnen worden om middels hun klimaatprojecten door te gaan met CO2 emissiereducties, tot soms zelfs wel 2029! Anders is de ondersteuning vanuit CDM voor hen ten einde, daarmee de steun van de ‘global community.’

Het is voor hen allen een vertrouwenskwestie. Velen zijn al lang(er) het vertrouwen kwijt, in UNFCCC, CDM en voornamelijk gebrek aan gederfde inkomsten. Te lang te lage prijzen voor hun CO2 reductie, en te veel en te hoge kosten voor onderhoud van de klimaatprojecten. Bijgaand de uitnodiging aan het adres van RDP Development BV.

Het bezoek ging niet zonder slag of stoot. Nog nooit eerder heeft een sociale onrust in een gastland een dusdanige invloed gehad dat afspraken moesten worden uitgesteld of zelfs afgezegd. Het was erg beangstigend af en toe, om niet in de ‘line of fire’ terecht te komen. Maar doordat de politie nergens op straat was om de demonstranten die de wegen blokkeerden te stoppen – mede om dergelijke escalerende situatie te voorkomen – bleef het bij enorme vertragingen en een enkele afzegging. Desondanks zijn twee van de drie palmolieplantages bezocht. En dat was een succes. Chronologische weergave van de gegevens verzamelingen worden hier in beeld gebracht.

Bovenstaande toont een optimale bedrijfsvoering van de eerste bezochte palmolie plantage. RDP heeft voor project participant Blue Sunset SA de PDD geschreven welke geschikt is voor crediting period renewal van 2×7 jaren, tot ca. 2029, ruim 400,000 ton CO₂ reductie ten opzichte van standaard in het gastland.
