SDGs 7, 9, 13 en 15 voor Belize: Distributed Generation Solar Belize in Central-America. . Het eerste Gold Standard gecertificeerde project in de host-country! Uniek. Een foto impressie.

De ‘boots on the ground’ zijn nu druk bezig met de agroforestry voor de impact assessment van SDG 15, Life on land.

Uniek is ook dat er 3 methodologieën worden aangehaald in 1 project.

• AMS I-D voor de rooftop solar
• AMS I-B voor de irrigatie op solar energy in de agroforestry projecten (400+ hectares!!!)
• ACM0022 voor de grootschalige zonnevelden die eigendom zijn van investeerders.

Ten behoeve van de finalisering van de validatie zijn er overeenkomsten nodig die de claims tegemoetkomen ten behoeve van de noodzaak om carbon credits te kunnen verhandelen, alsmede de verklaring van eigendomsrelatie van de carbon credits. Deze zijn benodigd voor het einde van de twee-jaar durende periode van preliminary review tot indiening voor project design review, uiterl6 september 2026.

En hoe bizar veel méér uitvergroot kan het gevolg van de aantoonbare belemmeringen in Belize in perspectief staan met de landen waarmee óók wordt vergeleken in dit artikel, Nederland en België? Daarmee vergeleken zijn de capaciteiten in Belize en de Dominicaanse Republiek slechts een peuleschil. In Nederland (vergelijk op bijgaande true-size kaart in grootte met de Dominicaanse Republiek) is er eind 2024 ongeveer 27.700 MWp aan zonne-energie. In België (vergelijk in grootte met Belize) is er eind 2024 ongeveer 12,000 MWp aan zonne-energie. Dat is logischerwijs dankzij de van oudsher sterkere economieën.

Er kan worden gesteld dat er dus slechts 4% zonne-energie in de Dominicaanse Republiek is benut ten opzichte van wat economisch mogelijk is (als alle belemmeringen zijn overwonnen). En in Belize is er slechts 0,5 % aan zonne-energie benut. Hiermee is een significant verschil aangeduid tussen Belize en de Dominicaanse Republiek van wel 8 x zoveel belemmeringen in Belize !

 In 2023 the last amendments were approved to the PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) between the Government of Belize and BAPCOL . Since then, BAPCOL , as the legal requesting governmental authority has called the PPA, has had to wait until April 14th of this year to request for the expression of interest for bidding.

As a result of the bidding, selection and approval process, it is the experience of the company GLRE LTD that in a relatively quick time  received the award on July 10th. By a stunning ceremony with officials (see photo), the contract was signed for the  PPA by  GLRE LTD. 

In parallel to this tender the company GLRE LTD has been working on multiple other solar projects in Belize. A multitude of solar rooftop installations are operating since 2023, next to many installations to generate aid for solar powered irrigation systems in newly developed Agroforestry projects in Belize.  As large as almost a stunning quarter of this capacity, GLRE LTD managed to outperform in setting up an organisation for engineering, procurement and construction, up to installation ánd customer service & support . Since 2024 the company GLRE LTD has an operation team that allows for capacity building for multiple jobs in Belize.

As long as working in 3-5 years before this achievement, GLRE LTD has been active in lobbying for renewable energy and acquisition towards this pool of excellence in multiple countries in Central-America. Since 2023 GLRE LTD involved local stakeholders in Belize in providing comments and feedback on what was initially a project plan for multiple countries in Central-America, that has now evolved into the development of a Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG) certified project. As part of the process for implementing monitoring of renewable energy generation, a team of international experts is involved to help the alignment with an international crediting system. This allows for the formation of the mitigation of impacts in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals 07, 08, 13 and even SDG 15 – Life On Land. Because of the reforestation efforts that occur when groundmounted solar PV areas come in place of existing forestry where it is of need for the irrigation of Agroforestry plantations and as remote as it is, there ain’t no grid. This in Belize largest ever solar power plant under the PPA with GLRE LTD, will be part of this GS4GG project  .

Plantage methode: door Agroforestry bescherming van ontbossing van 2 miljoen 23 duizend en 425 m2 in eerste fase, opeenvolgende fases periodiek aangevuld

Manier van teelt: organisch

Duurzaamheid: energie voor verwerkings- en verpakkingsproces met behulp van stroom vanuit zonnepanelen (batterijen uit 35 MW capaciteit)

Productieaantal: 2 miljoen per maand

Op daken te installeren zonnepanelen voor zelfvoorziening zijn particulieren, kleine bedrijven en zorgcentra heel erg gebaat bij eigen stroom. Er wordt zo voorkomen dat geregeld voorkomende stroomuitval zorgt voor problemen met koeling en houdbaarheid van eten en drinken. Laat staan dat zorgcentra er geen werkende zorginstrumenten op stroom kunnen blijven garanderen. Dat wordt nu wel mogelijk gemaakt. Gelukkig.

Het werken aan de UN SDGs vindt hier dus plaats op meer dan alleen klimaat-actie, SDG 13. Bij Sustain-CERT wordt voorgelegd hoe en wanneer in deze huidige moeilijke tijd door Covid-19 pandemie de Gold Standard certificering voor deze Program of Activities onder de GS4GG is te doen. Dit wordt begeleid door RDP Development BV.

De doelstellingen met het programma van activiteiten is om verspreid over meerdere Centraal-Amerikaanse landen en in de Caraïbisch eilanden deze hulp uit te bouwen. Met de minister in Belize is gesproken over de additionaliteit. “Zonder funding vanuit inkomsten gegenereerd met de verkoop van carbon credits, komt zoiets niet vanzelf van de grond,” aldus de minister.

Het moet mogelijk zijn om 700 MW zonnepanelen te kunnen installeren voor 2023. Hiermee dragen we bij aan een duurzame leefomgeving. Voor meer informatie, zie Global-Climate projecten pagina Distributed Generation Solar Central America.

Right on the job, Betulia’s small hydropower project with social reforestation programs, nature conservation, improvement of local infrastructure and jobs creation, is reforming native people’s lives in Honduras.

This run-of-river hydroelectric generating power plant is providing clean and affordable energy to the national grid (displacing traditional fossil fueled power plants) and improves the native people’s lives.
Money generated from the sale of carbon credits have enabled the project to introduce zero emissions energy system technology that has the following sustainable benefits within the communities in which the project technologies are applied.

• Up to 23,000 MWh of clean and affordable energy provided to the local electricity grid each year
• Protection of local environment (Flora and Fauna)
• 12 jobs have been created of which 8 employees have been hired locally from the region to operate and maintain the plant
• Financial aid and contributions are provided, improving the human and institutional capacity in local communities in the region (for local infrastructure such as improved bridges + roads) and schools
• The community assisted in reforestation of land area with 6,000 mahogany plants and 5,000 more plants were in the nursery development process until 2018.

With an estimated 90% of the world’s population breathing polluted air, shifting to renewables is increasingly important.

While some technologies like solar and wind have become mainstream in many markets, barriers remain in some parts of the world – often those most affected by a changing climate.

To ensure finance and change reach those countries that need it most, Gold Standard focuses new project development for grid-connected renewable energy in least developed countries, small island developing states, conflict zones, and those countries facing unusual challenges to modernize their energy supply.

Palm oil production has long been criticised for its environmental impact through deforestation and despite a strong environmental case for curtailing the industry, at present none of the existing alternative products would be economically or environmentally viable at scale.

“Palm oil is the most widely used land-grown oil crop, and expansion in the market over the past few decades has led to increases in greenhouse gas emissions and the loss of biodiverse tropical forest areas to farming. Whilst action is being taken to improve the sustainability of palm oil cultivation it is not happening as effectively or quickly as it needs to.”

“Governments in producing countries and industry should be working together closely to reduce the impact of the industry while synthetic alternatives are developed for the sake of our climate.”

The suite of measures they recommend to reduce the impact of production include empowering the existing Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) scheme to take effective enforcement action where needed.

Vlieg je met KLM van Nederland naar Engeland, dan ben je, volgens haar CO2ZERO, 34kg CO2 aan het uitstoten. Dat kun je compenseren door 0,29 euro per persoon te investeren, dat KLM steekt in een Gold Standard bomen-aanplant-project, Omgerekend voor 4 personen is dat 8,5 euro per ton CO2.

Met vieren vlogen we met KLM en hebben als gezin 10 dollar geïnvesteerd in het Gold Standard project van een partner van Global-Climate. Eigenlijk volgens KLM ruim 800kg CO2 teveel. Is dat erg? Nee. Wij voelen ons daar goed bij.

En zie hier, na plaatsing op 1 oktober, is al een groep mensen tot vrijwillige compensatie van CO2 uitstoot overgegaan!
